Recognizing incentivization as an integral part of inspiring positive action, the Academy of Sustainability has introduced innovative competitions that encourage participants to explore their full potential, challenge the norm, and create their own solutions to environmental issues. From giving free rein to their creativity, to nurturing habits like recycling, our competitions have had an incredible impact on the community for over a decade. In partnership with Duracell, the Academy of Sustainability conducts The Great Battery Challenge (TGBC) on an annual basis.

Formed in 2018, through a partnership between BEEAH Education and Duracell, The Great Battery Challenge (TGBC) encourages students to collect used and discarded batteries, helping them to raise recycling rates in the UAE. Over the years, the competition has expanded with the active participation of schools from across the nation and collected a record number of discarded batteries. With most of the batteries purchased in the UAE ending up in landfills, battery recycling is critical to reducing pollution and environmental contamination, as well as increasing waste diversion rates. By empowering students and providing them with the opportunity to be environmental ambassadors, The Great Battery Challenge has increased battery recycling rates exponentially and created a culture of recycling that is paving the way for a greener future.
